Tubing in New Braunfels

As the summer months approach and the mercury rises, New Braunfels, Texas slowly fills with pleasure seekers looking to submerge themselves in the cool waters of the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. Or, you know, just float down on a inner tube with a cold beverage in hand. This once sleepy German-American Town has reinvented itself as an entertainment destination in Central Texas. Starting from Memorial Day to the end of summer, people venture into the town to enjoy the truly Texan pastime of ‘floating a river’.  The lackadaisical flows of both the Comal and Guadalupe rivers provide a perfect venue for tubes and brews. A major distinction between the two however, is that the Comal River (sometimes touted as the shortest river in North America) has a can ban in place that does not allow disposable containers onto the river. In contrast, the longer and wider Guadalupe has no such ban in place. The two rivers offers aesthetically different experiences, the Comal is located in downtown New Braunfels and is populated with carefully manicured yards, park land, and views of Schlitterbahn. The Guadalupe, in contrast, is a largely rural float that gently flows around age old cypress trees and Texas Hill Country vistas. Both rivers are surrounded by outfitters which provide transportation to and from the river, as well as tubes and other necessities for a lazy day on the water.
